Well, qualifying is over and I guess you couldn't say it was pretty. On a positive note, we made some adjustments to the cars setting during the session that has definitely made an improvement for the car.Posted by Administrator
Everything started off pretty well for me. I began my session getting the tires warm for the first couple laps. I began to push hard and I noticed an understeer in the car. It was not a major problem, but it was defenitely costing me some time.
On about lap 6, I was on a great lap. My first 2 sectors had been my quickest, however, as I approached chicane near the pit lane, I hit the inside curb and came off strange. This put my car into a spin! I touched the wall, damaged my left rear wheel, and my rear bumper. I drove the car back into pit lane.
The mechanics inspected the car and everything seemed to be ok. I put on my second set of tires and went out. At about turn 6, my alternator light came on and by turn 10, my engine temperature light came on. I later found out my alternator belt had come off and had caused the water pump to stop and therfore overheating my engine. I was able to bring it back to pit lane, and I thought my session was over.
To my surprise, my mechanics at Schnabl Engineering and with some assistance from Porsche, we were able to put a new alternator belt in and I was able to go back out to finish my session.
When I went back out, I felt that I had a little less confidence than before I crashed the car. I quickly built this back up by going quicker every lap, on my last of 4 laps, I was able to put in my best lap of the session and thankfully jump from 23rd to 17th. Of course, this is not the result I wanted, but I felt that under the circumstances, I was lucky to be able to get back out and set a time.
I definitely could've put a better time out there with a few more laps, and I am quite disappointed wiht my mistake early in the session, but I'll put this behind me and drive a good race tommorow. Everything is possible in a race like Monaco so I hope to put in a solid result and score some more points in the race.
Qualifying is the most important, especially on a track like Monaco where overtaking is very very difficult, so alot of the weekend was lost from the bad qualifying result. I can't change the past, so I can only look forward!
I have a day off tommorow and the race will be on Sunday. Remember to catch the exciting race live on Eurosport!
