My life in the fast lane
Wet Wet Wet Wet in Magny Cours!!

After the Monaco GP, we headed straight up to Magny Cours for a test today. As we arrived last night, the rain was absolutely pouring down! I went to bed hoping it would be dry for todays test, but unfortunately, as I woke up this morning, the rain was still coming down.

You shouldn't feel bad for me though, starting at 8am yesterday, the Peugeot Lemans team was simulating a 24hour race. I think it must've rained/down poured for the entire 24hours they were on the race track! They finished at 8am this morning before we took to the track at 9am.

The team had planned to try some settings for the car which we have wanted to test for a while now, but due to the rain, we had to change the car to the rain setup in the morning. It was a tough day on the track as we struggled to find grip on the car today. My Porsche was really sliding and extremely difficult to drive. We made some progress throughout the day, but it was hard to measure our changes due to the constantly changing track conditions.

By the final hour, the track had dried. I was able to drive about five flying laps before I started to hear some gearbox noises. To be safe, I decided to end the day there so the team could check the gearbox properly before any further damage was caused.

I'm ready to leave France tommorrow so I can get out of the RAIN!!! haha... I'll be flying tommorow morning to Kuala Lumpur where I will be testing a new 2008 GT3 RSR in preparation for the 12 hours of Sepang in August. We will also be doing some charity passenger laps on the track in a cup car and 07 RSR in order to raise money for a Singaporean Children's fund and also funds to help with the Sichuan earthquake relief in China.

So as I woke up this morning, I knew it was going to be a tough day in Monaco. I looked out the window and saw that it was raining. It is a bit unusual because after talking to Monaco racing driver David Saelens, he told me that it NEVER rains during the Monaco Grand Prix.

David also gave me a few tips before the race, STAY out of trouble, as cars will be pushing hard and it would be easy to be involved with accidents. So I gave myself a mind set of driving hard, but to be careful to not go over the limit and take unneccesary chances.

What makes the Supercup car harder to drive than the Carrera Cup car is the fact it uses Carbon Ceramic brakes instead of the steel brake rotars. This makes the brakes extremely sensitive, ESPECIALLY when the track is wet. A locked tire can easily result in overshooting the corner and going into a wall on the street circuit.

The race started under safety car, which wasn't so good as I started in 17th position. The safety car drove faster than usual, so the cars became very spread out already before the green lights came on.

During the opening laps, Nicolas Armindo was in front of me. I could see he was struggling with grip, so the cars in front of us began to pull a big gap. The Monaco circuit is very difficult to make overtaking manoeuvers, so only on the 4th lap was I able to pass Armindo. I squeezed by him on the exit of the chicane, and at the same time, Guerrero was able to follow me through. 3 laps later, I hit a puddle which caused me to lock my rear wheels. This mistake was enough to let Guerrero overtake me and take 14th position.

The rest of the race was quite trouble free. It took alot of concentration to keep up the race pace as I had a fast pack of cars chasing behind me, but I was able to drive a good race and cross the line in 15th place, the final points scoring position.

It is always a pleasure to drive in Monaco, but it is not as satisifying when you don't achieve your target of finishing in the top 10. I will need to be able to attack the circuit with more confidence during qualifying next season in order to put in a better result for the race. I guess I can't think that far ahead yet as I will need to concentrate on the test coming up in two days at Magny Cours.

The team heads directly up to Magny-Cours for a test on Tuesday on the Grand Prix circuit. I will not be racing in the Magny Cours Supercup race this year which is coming up in June, as there is a clash in the schedule with the Carrera Cup Asia race in Zhu Hai, but I hope to be able to try some car settings which I have wanted to try earlier this season.

Taking over the wheel for me in the French Grand Prix will be Keita Sawa, a Japanese driver from the Carrera Cup Asia, so he will come test the car in Magny Cours the day after me on Wednesday.

After my full day test on Tuesday, I will fly directly from Paris which will have me arrive at 630am on Thursday morning in Malaysia. From there, I will go straight to the Sepang race track in Kuala Lumpur and test in a Porsche GT3 RSR which I will compete in this year at the Merdeka 12 Hours of Sepang late August.

Au Revoir from Monaco!

Qualifying News from Monaco

Well, qualifying is over and I guess you couldn't say it was pretty. On a positive note, we made some adjustments to the cars setting during the session that has definitely made an improvement for the car.

Everything started off pretty well for me. I began my session getting the tires warm for the first couple laps. I began to push hard and I noticed an understeer in the car. It was not a major problem, but it was defenitely costing me some time.

On about lap 6, I was on a great lap. My first 2 sectors had been my quickest, however, as I approached chicane near the pit lane, I hit the inside curb and came off strange. This put my car into a spin! I touched the wall, damaged my left rear wheel, and my rear bumper. I drove the car back into pit lane.

The mechanics inspected the car and everything seemed to be ok. I put on my second set of tires and went out. At about turn 6, my alternator light came on and by turn 10, my engine temperature light came on. I later found out my alternator belt had come off and had caused the water pump to stop and therfore overheating my engine. I was able to bring it back to pit lane, and I thought my session was over.

To my surprise, my mechanics at Schnabl Engineering and with some assistance from Porsche, we were able to put a new alternator belt in and I was able to go back out to finish my session.

When I went back out, I felt that I had a little less confidence than before I crashed the car. I quickly built this back up by going quicker every lap, on my last of 4 laps, I was able to put in my best lap of the session and thankfully jump from 23rd to 17th. Of course, this is not the result I wanted, but I felt that under the circumstances, I was lucky to be able to get back out and set a time.

I definitely could've put a better time out there with a few more laps, and I am quite disappointed wiht my mistake early in the session, but I'll put this behind me and drive a good race tommorow. Everything is possible in a race like Monaco so I hope to put in a solid result and score some more points in the race.

Qualifying is the most important, especially on a track like Monaco where overtaking is very very difficult, so alot of the weekend was lost from the bad qualifying result. I can't change the past, so I can only look forward!

I have a day off tommorow and the race will be on Sunday. Remember to catch the exciting race live on Eurosport!

Ready in Monaco!

Hi everyone, hope everything is going well with you all! This week, I stopped by Malaysia to watch the Asia Super Car Club race! My sponsors from LKM, Siu Tit Lung and Siu Yuk Lung were out racing their new Lamborghini Gallardo's in the LKM livery.

I flew directly from Kuala Lumpur out to Paris, where I made a road trip driving down through France to the Cote d'Azur. I arrived in Monaco on Wednesday and the weather was sunny and fantastic. I was a bit worried last week when I checked the forecast and it said that it was supposed to rain in Monaco. There has been patches of clouds here and there in the evening, but the day time has so far been quite sunny and warm.

The great feeling of the Monaco Grand Prix comes right back to you when you pass the tunnels from France and first drive down the hill to Monte Carlo. The city and ocean is just breath taking at first glance. I met up with my team for a quick chat and then went onto the circuit for my usual track walk. It takes nearly 3 hours to walk the circuit and study it in detail.

Just like Macau, the track is open to regular traffic during the day, so that makes it difficult to walk and see the corners properly. I feel like I know the circuit much better than last year when I made the same walk because of my knowledge from last season here. I'm feeling ready and confident to attack this circuit. Of course, like any street circuit, you must be cautious at the opening laps, but then once familiarized, you must attack in order to gain confidence on the circuit.

The team and my Porsche are prepared and ready for the challenge. We relaxed last nite with the team at the circuit by having a barbeque for dinner.

I'm really looking forward to this afternoon when we take to the track for free practice. Wish me luck and I'm excited as I love street circuits.

Au Revoir from Monaco!
