A busy week!

Its been quite a busy week for me after Indonesia. I've had meetings/sponsor events/interviews throughout the week in Shanghai, Zhu Hai, and Hong Kong.

In Zhu Hai, it was actually quite interesting. I supported Jebsen Porsche Center Guangzhou in a customer event. I worked with the customers in the morning to give tips and pointers on how to drive their Porsche's better around the Zhu Hai circuit. I also did some Taxi laps in a 911 Carrera S and also a Cayman S so the customers could get a feel what the cars could do around the circuit.

In the afternoon, the pace changed and I went with Alex from the magazine Hong Kong Golfer for a round of Golf at the Lakewood Golf Course, right next to the race track. As I was hitting balls at the golf club, I could still hear the Porsche's go around the race track! It was alot of fun and my golfing continues to improve!! It was fun because we even did some photos of me driving around in the golf cart with my Red Bull race helmet on! haha...

On a seperate note, last nite, I went to the Alicia Keys concert with a few friends. It was alot of fun because we were able to get front row center tickets to the concert, so we could witness how amazing of a performer she was from right up close. She is truly an fantastic vocalist and she made her performance look effortless. Below are a few pics we took from the night.

Tonight, I head over to Budapest for the Hungarian Grand Prix. I feel that I have been driving well as of late, so I hope to carry that on over to Budapest. I really like this short and twisty circuit so hopefully I can put on a good performance.

I will be on the road for the entire month of August, so please stay tuned to my travels right here on www.darryloyoung.com.

Thanks and talk soon!!

Great weekend in Indonesia!

It turned out to be a fantastic weekend in Indonesia. Although I wasn’t able to pull of the double win for Team Jebsen, I managed a win in round 7 and a 2nd place position in round 8. This gives us an eleven point lead over Sugden and Jones, both of whom are currently tied for 2nd position.

Race 1 was a perfect race. I had a great start which sprung me into the lead by turn 1. It seemed Sugden struggled off the line and he was overtaken by Menzel in the process. I managed to be able to drive three great opening laps and make the most of my new tires. I opened up a 3 second lead from Menzel and Sugden, who were battling for position behind.

The Sentul circuit is extremely hard on tires, so I just tried to drive smooth and consistent throughout the race, enough to maintain the lead, yet not to over work the tires. I held the gap for all 15 laps and took my 2nd victory of the season and taking the fastest lap of the race in the mean time.

This win is dedicated to my dad, because I told him I’d try to have a win for his birthday which was on Friday! Also a special thanks to my mechanics because they worked very hard over the weekend in order to match the constant changes in setup we had to endure due to the difficult track conditions.

I stayed very focus between the races and the team prepared the car for the 2nd race.

In round 8, I started from pole position. I had a good start off the line and lead the race for the opening three laps. I was not able to open up the gap like I had done in round 7, but instead, Sugden seemed to have very good pace in the opening laps. He began to attack me, and then in turn one, when I was slightly protecting my line, the car didn’t stop well and I ran just a little bit wide. This gave Sugden the opportunity to overtake me. I was able to stay with him the next 3 laps, but after an unsuccessful attempt to overtake Sugden in one of the corners, I dropped back a few car lengths.

This gave Jones the opportunity to begin attacking me. In the process, Sugden managed to open up an even bigger gap. I fought off Jones and was fortunate enough to begin getting away from him again. This gave me the chance to continue chasing Sugden. It seemed my car was a bit better than his as we neared the end of the race. I didn’t give up, and began closing in on him. I couldn’t close the gap quick enough and ended up finished the race in 2nd position with just a 0.9 seconds gap between us. Tim drove an excellent race so congratulations to him. I really enjoyed the battle between us throughout the weekend!

It’s a shame I couldn’t finish the race with another victory, but I am very happy with the results and the fact we managed 8 consecutive podiums now in 8 races this season. We scored some valuable points in the championship, and with 4 races remaining in the season, every point will count.

I look forward my next race in the PCCA which will be held in Singapore at the Singaporean Formula One Grand Prix. For my next race, I will be back in my Porsche Super Cup car in Budapest, Hungary! It is in two weeks time, so I will get some time to prepare for that race before heading out to Hungary.

Just missed pole position!

It was an enjoyable battle with Tim Sugden for pole position today. Unfortunately, I came out in 2nd place, but it was an intense battle which makes it fun.

After struggling with the car during practice Friday, I made changes over night which I felt would help the car. I was able to discuss this over the phone with my engineer, Sven Schnabl. Yes..its called telephone engineering!!

It worked, because on the final free practice on Saturday morning, I made great improvements on the setup. The mechanics also did a great job after that practice, because there was limited time between the sessions, so the guys rushed quickly to get the setup perfected and readjusted just in time for qualifying.

In qualifying, I had a good stint on my first set of tires. I managed to take first position with a time of 1:30.762. I waited in the pits to see if anyone could better the time as they went out on the 2nd set of tires. Near the end of the session, Sugden posted a 1:30.639, beating my time by 0.1 seconds.

With 5 minutes remaining in the session, I decided to go back out on my second set of tires to try and claim pole position. I had only time for 1 lap to put down a time. I drove a good lap, but on the very last turn of my lap, there was a yellow flag, forcing me to brake into the corner early! That lap ended up with a time of 1:30.663, only 0.024 seconds slower than Sugden's lap.

The whole process was a fun experience because I enjoy the pressure to put in a good lap, but of course, I'm a bit disappointed not to take pole position and score the bonus 1 point.

I look forward to a good race for tomorrow. I will fine tune my car for the race, and hope to put in a good performance. The most important thing will be to drive a good clean race and continuing scoring good points in the championship race, but of course, hopefully score my 2nd win of the season!

Results:

1. Tim Sugden 1:30.639
2. Darryl O'Young 1:30.663
3. Christian Menzel 1:31.067
4. Marchy Lee 1:31.088
5. Christian Jones 1:31.548
6. Alain Li 1:31.950
7. Matthew Marsh 1:32.167
8. Dilantha Malagamuwa 1:32.376

Free practice in Indonesia

First off, a big happy birthday to my dad! He just celebrated his 62nd birthday and I wish i was in Vancouver to celebrate with him and the family! As most of you know, my dad is a big part of my life and he has also played a HUGE part in helping to shape my career, and also me as a person.

I had 2 free practice sessions today in Indonesia. Unfortunately, my engineer, Michael Sauer was unable to attend due to some personal matters, so I will have to work hard to get the car setup myself. It is tough, but great practice to try and tackle the car on my own.

When trying to setup my car without an engineer, it forces me to think about my car much more in depth and also think about a much wider array of things. Very good practice, but extremely challenging at the same time.

I made a few mistakes with tire pressure today, ending up setting it too high. It was difficult to pin point a perfect pressure setting, but I got a much better idea after the practice sessions.

The Sentul circuit has a very unique surface, so it causes the car to struggle with grip. I finished the day in 4th overall in free practice, but I will be looking to improve this much more as I head into qualifying tomorrow. My time wasn't bad considering the struggles I had with grip, so I made changes to the car over night which I feel will give me the extra bite I need to carry more speed through the corners.

Let you know how it goes when I finish qualifying tomorrow!
Arrived in Jakarta

I arrived in Jakarta yesterday night in preparation for the 7th round for the Porsche Carrera Cup Asia. I'm currently leading the championship and I am really focused on putting in a good performance here for Team Jebsen.

It's my second time here in Indonesia, the last time being 2006. I walked the circuit today and I was quickly refreshed on the characteristics of the track. There is a very abbrasive surface here and remembering from my experience here in the past, that leads to very high tire wear.

I'm feeling very good and ready for the race. I've built enough experience over the years to put behind tough weekends, and really turn it into positive energy. That will be tested this weekend as I have had a very trying time the past month.

The team worked hard on the preparation of the car today, and it is ready for the first of three practice sessions this weekend before we qualify on Saturday afternoon. There will be two races on Sunday each being 15 laps.

Jakarta still seems to be a bit chaotic like before, but it is a bit of a different experience when we get to the circuit located in Sentul, which is about an hours drive out of Jakarta. As I was walking around the track, there were alot of kids standing around the circuit yelling and waving. People here really seem friendly! They were really excited about the races this weekend, so hopefully all of us in the Carrera Cup will be able to put on some good races for the fans.
