O’YOUNG MAKES DOUBLE OVERALL TOP 7 & INDEPENDENTS TOP 3 AT MONZA
SIGN OF CONSISTENCY AS DARRYL CLIMBED TO RANK 3RD IN INDEPENDENTS STANDINGS AND 9TH IN WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP STANDINGS
(16 May 2011, Hong Kong, China) Despite being handicapped the maximum 40kg penalty ballast because of strong performances of the Cruze 1.6 Turbo, O’Young showed sign of consistency bagging crucial Trophy and Championship points. Darryl O’Young, who qualified a career best overall 6th on Saturday, claimed his second independents podium of the day yesterday at Monza and the third for him out of six races held so far this season.
The WTCC sophomore claimed the final podium spot in the independent category and 7th place overall in race 1 before started screwing harder in race 2.
The fight in race 2 was especially thrilling, with Tiago Monteiro, Norbert Michelisz, Kristian Poulsen, Gabriele Tarquini and the 2010 World’s Best Touring Car Rookie swapping positions at every lap. O’Young made a great passing manoeuvre in the last lap and finished P6 overall and 2nd place independents, scoring a total of 14 points for the Yokohama Drivers’ Trophy at Monza.
After the Italian race weekend of the FIA 2011 WTCC, O’Young climbs up to rank in the third in the Yokohama Drivers’ Trophy and 9th in the overall World Championship standing. The championship will resume for rounds 7 and 8 in Hungary on June 3-5.

Qualifying – career best P6
"I am very satisfied with qualifying this weekend as it was my career best 6th place overall. Michelisz made a good lap and managed to just grab pole position away from me in the independents category, but overall, I am glad to have made it to Q2 for the first time this season.”
Race 1 at Monza (2011 round 5) – Independents P3 and overall P7
"It was a tough race for me as I struggled with understeer for most of the race. I had a good start and was running with the lead pack early on, but contact with Coronel allowed Tarquini and Poulsen to get by me. With this loss in position, it made me lose touch with the important slip stream from the lead pack and it resulted in several battles with cars in the second group of cars.”
Race 2 at Monza (2011 round 6) – Independents P2 and overall P6
"On the standing start, it was a dreadful start for my front-wheel-drive as I had too much wheel spin and 5 BMWs passed me off the line and down to 12th place on the opening lap. It was one of the hardest races but I managed to carve my way back through the field up to P5. Then I got into a big battle with several cars and was nearly trading places every single lap. Towards the end of the race, I managed a last lap late braking maneuver on Michelisz into the final few bends and satch back P2 in the independents.”
