O’YOUNG NARROW GAP TO LEADERS AT HUNGARORING
DARRYL FINISH ON INDEPENDENTS PODIUM IN FOUR OF LAST FIVE ROUNDS

(6 June 2011, Hong Kong, China) Starting from the 11th on the grid, Darryl O’Young did a superb job in race 2 in Budapest amid mixed weather conditions of hot temperature and torrential rain, as he earned the final spot on the independents podium together with an overall 8th place finish.

Darryl started race 2 surviving the early chaos before the race was red flagged due to a flooded track.

"It was an extremely hot race as we were in the cars for over an hour in hot temperatures. We started the race and it began to rain on the opening lap.” O’Young moved into P2 upon restart before settling for a podium finish in the independents, as he struggled with braking and grip on rain tires later on with the track began to try out.

With his fourth podium finish in last five rounds, Darryl is quickly stacking up points in the Yokohama Drivers’ Trophy. The WTCC sophomore now trailed joint leaders Kristian Poulsen and Javier Villa by only nine points. The Dane was forced to withdraw from race 2 after just three laps due to an incident, allowing O’Young to outscore the leader eight points to five from two races in Budapest.

Earlier in race 1, Darryl was once occupying P3 of the independents and the overall 8th spot, before a lap 8 drive-through penalty for cutting turn 4 doomed the 2010 World’s Best Touring Car Rookie to an 7th place independents, and overall P12 finish.

"I don’t agree with this decision as I feel it deserved a warning rather than a straight penalty,” said O’Young, who still managed scoring two points from race 1.

The WTCC will now take a two-week break before races resume for rounds 9 and 10 in Czech on June 18-19.

Qualifying – P11
"It was really up and down weekend for me here. We were quick during practice sessions but made some wrong decisions during 1st qualifying session which left us 0.1 seconds away from making it into Q2 session.”

Race 1 at Budapest (2011 round 7) – Independents P7 and overall P12
"I was caught up into a battle with Tiago Monteiro and Tom Coronel. Coronel gave me a lot of pressure and hit me a few times hard from behind, which force me to lose touch with Monteiro. During the battle, I cut turn 4 by 10cm too much, resulting in a drive through penalty.”

Race 2 at Budapest (2011 round 8) – Independents P3 and overall P8
"On the restart I was able to move into P2 in the independents, but I struggled with braking and grip on wet tires during the latter stages of the race as the track began to dry out.”
