DARRYL BAGGED FIFTH INDEPENDENTS PODIUM IN LAST SIX ROUNDS
O’YOUNG SENT OUT OF RACE 2 IN BRNO BY MICHELISZ’S FOUL PLAY
(20 June 2011, Hong Kong, China) Darryl O’Young seized the opportunity of a good qualifying result in Brno, Czech Republic, and turned it into his fifth podium finish in six rounds, as he pocketed eight more points in the Yokohama Drivers’ Trophy.
O’Young started from P8 overall in the opening race, second only to Kristian Poulsen in the independents classification. Darryl successfully defended his position, beating Norbert Michelisz by a mere of 0.3 seconds for an overall P7 finish, and the first runner-up spot in the independents podium. This is the fifth podium in last six rounds for the on-form O’Young.
"Driving with under-steer, I struggled in race pace and have to use every tactic to defend my position, and I am able to finish race in 7th overall and 2nd independent,” he said. Ranked fourth in the independents championship before the race, Darryl ran out of luck in race two despite starting from the 5th place on the grid. O’Young was again battling for places with Michelisz before being involved in a crash with the Hungarian, in which Darryl was pushed off onto the gravel and eventually forced to retire.
"Unfortunately I was hit off which ended my race in the gravels. I am sure it will be a better race at Portugal in two weeks time,” said the WTCC sophomore. Michelisz was given a postrace drive-through penalty for the contact, which resulted in 30 seconds added to his elapsed time, demoting him four places back to the 15th.
Darryl now remained four points behind the 3rd place Michelisz in the independents standings. The rounds 11 and 12 of the 2011 WTCC season will resume in Porto, Portugal in two weeks time, which also marks the half way point of the championship.
