O’YOUNG NETS 6TH INDEP PODIUM OF THE SEASON ON PORTO STREETS
PORTO PODIUM KEEPS O’YOUNG WITHIN 16 POINTS BEHIND NEW LEADER
(4 July 2011, Hong Kong, China) Despite qualified twelve on the grid in Portugal, Darryl O’Young went flying along the streets of Porto and overtook three opponents to land him the second runner-up spot in the independents, and an overall P9 finish in the second race of the Portuguese WTCC yesterday.
"I was running with the top 10 cars, but about 5 laps into the race, Michel Nykjaer began to struggle with traction and I was being held up a lot. I made a pass to get by him for 9th overall and 3rd in independents but it cost me a lot of time,” said the 3-time Macau street race winner.
This is the sixth podium of the season of O’Young and he has stepped on the podium in each of the last five race weekend, dating back to the one in Belgium in late April when he was crowned the independent champion. The nine points he pocketed over the weekend saw him pull within 16 points of new leader Norbert Michelisz in the Yokohama Drivers’ Trophy.
Earlier in race one, O’Young was less than 0.5 seconds behind the fastest car in the independents classifications driven by Michelisz, but had to settle for an independent P6 and overall P13 finish.
"I had a tough start behind Engstler as he didn't get a good start, so that let Barth get past me in turn 1. This was costly as a few corners later, Barth and Villa hit each other in front of me. I managed to avoid the contact but I lost touch with the group of cars ahead of me,” he said.
The busy summer schedule of the 2011 WTCC season continues in England in two weeks’ time. The race will be held on the Donington Park circuit in Leicestershire, which had been home to Moto GP for 23 years from 1987, but it will be staging its WTCC debut.

4 Darryl O’Young (CHN) 58 1 win + 5 podiums
5 Michel Nykjaer (DNK) 53 1 win + 4 podiums
Qualifying – P12:
"It is never a good feeling to not make it into the top 10 for Q2. This weekend, we qualified 12th and missed out on 10th by only 0.08 seconds. Making it to 10th could've changed our entire weekend as P10 in Q1 puts you on pole position in race 2.”
Race 1 at Porto (2011 round 11) – Independents P6 and overall P13:
"Barth and Villa hit each other in front of me. I managed to avoid the contact but I lost touch with the group of cars ahead of me. We didn't have the pace today to catch up and fight, so a disappointing result in the first race.”
Race 2 at Porto (2011 round 12) – Independents P3 and overall P9:
"I was running with the top 10 cars, but about 5 laps into the race, Michel Nykjaer began to struggle with traction and I was being held up a lot. I made a pass to get by him for 9th overall and 3rd in independents but it cost me a lot of time.”
