O’YOUNG MOVED UP TO RANK TIED-2ND IN INDEPENDENTS
TWO POINTS SEPERATED TOP FOUR DRIVERS
WTCC ON SUMMER BREAK AND RESUME IN SEPTEMBER
(1 August 2011, Hong Kong, China) Despite missing out on Qualifying 2 by a mere 0.01 seconds, the WTCC Chinese driver Darryl O’Young made the most of some below-par performances by his primary opponents, and stormed to a tied-second place of the Yokohama Drivers’ Trophy after rounds 15 & 16 of the 2011 World Touring Car Championship season in Oschersleben, Germany yesterday.
"I had a good chance to capitalize and take the lead in the Independent trophy this weekend, but it just didn’t come together. It is interesting though, because as I had a tough weekend, so did my two main rivals in the Independent trophy. Both Michelisz and Poulsen failed to score strong points and I have been able to close the gap on them,” O’Young said.
Driving a Chevrolet Cruze 1.6T, team bamboo-engineering driver O’Young finished P8 and P4 in the independent category respectively in the two races this weekend. The six valuable points added to his season tally moved the Hong Kong number one driver to the joint-second spot alongside Kristian Poulsen, who pocketed only three points this race weekend.
The duo from Hong Kong and Denmark now trail sole-leader Norbert Michelisz by just one point, while standing only a point ahead of race 2 winner Franz Engstler, who won his career-first WTCC race on home soil, suggesting a promising end to final four races of the season.
"To leave Germany in second rather than first in the independents standings is a disappointment. I can only look forward to next race in Spain, our team will take this short summer break to evaluate where we are and then take the steps necessary to improve our results,” said O’Young.
The 2011 WTCC season will now take a month off as the race will resume in Valencia, Spain for rounds 17 & 18 in the first week of September.
2011 Yokohama Drivers’ Trophy after Rd 16 (Top 5):
Position Driver Total points Stat
1 Norbert Michelisz (HUN) 79 4 wins + 4 podiums
2 Kristian Poulson (DNK) 78 4 winss + 3 podiums
3 Darryl O’Young (CHN) 78 1 win + 6 podiums
4 Franz Engstler (DEU) 77 4 wins + 3 podiums
5 Javier Villa (ESP) 73 1 win + 4 podiums
Qualifying Q1 – P11:
"I was sitting in 10th place with about ten seconds remaining in the session, but Engstler pipped me by 0.01 seconds, bumping me out of the top 10 and forcing me to miss out on the all important reverse grid pole position for race 2. It was a very costly one hundredth of a second.”
Race 1 at Oscherselben (2011 round 15) – Independents P8 and overall P14:
"I had a great start and managed to pass a few cars, but unfortunately I made a slight error by locking my tires into Turn 3 running me wide into the grass. By the time I recovered, I dropped to the back and had to fight my way back up.”
Race 2 at Oscherselben (2011 round 16) – Independents P4 and overall P11:
"I had a race long battle with Independent rival Javier Villa, I passed him mid way through the race, but he managed to get me back in the final few laps of the race. I eventually finished 4th, not the best result but I was glad to take the points and move into 2nd place in the Independent standings.”
